On Your First Date*

Hi, there! So, how is it going? We have been learning together for a while now. I am sure, by now, you have made some headway (progress) in speaking good English.

Alright, the other day a student asked me, “Ma’am, how do I make an impact (to make an impression) on the woman I fancy (to like)?” Well, yes, students, especially the ones who come to me specifically to learn English, do ask me all sorts of questions. So, don’t be surprised. And I do indulge (satisfy) their queries, for I do not want them to make a fool of themselves by saying something completely bizarre (inexplicable, strange) or outrageous (shameful, shocking).

Haven’t you heard boys using a completely obnoxious (intolerable, horrible) line, “I want your friendship?” Or “Can I have your friendship?’’ Trust me both these lines are a complete put off, therefore, my dear friends, try something that’s more classy and unique.

Right, so you have this good looking girl in your class or office or is a neighbour and you want to ask her out. How will you do that? Here are some of the ways:

  • Hey, how about some coffee with me?
  • Can I take you out for an ice cream?
  • Would you mind coming along for coffee with me?
  • Hi! There’s this nice coffee shop nearby, mind visiting the place with me?
  • How about some coffee?

Don’t be a moron (stupid, silly) and ask the lady out for dinner on a first date, she’ll most probably just look through you (ignore you). Be patient and remember, good communication is your key to her heart.

And please, please don’t start calling her ‘dear ‘and ‘baby ‘from your first date onwards. These words sound really tacky (cheap, vulgar), unless they come from the right person. Hence, first you’ve got to become her ‘right person’ and then take the liberty of calling her ‘baby’ or ‘darling’.

Now, that you’ve taken her out for many dates and you can see it in her eyes that she’s fallen for you, (is in love with you) now what do you say to her? Well, here are a few phrases, before you actually say those three magical words- ‘I love you’.

The words are actually over the top (too emotional) and will sound silly to cynics, (a person who has negative opinions about other people and about the things people do) but then everything sounds silly to cynics, thus let’s not bother about them. Here are the phrases for you:

  • I’m smitten by you.
  • I’m under your spell.
  • You’re my whole world.
  • We complement each other.

Hmmm… some progress has been made and you’re now an official couple. But don’t forget one little thing that girls like to be told time and again that they’re loved, so don’t be daft (stupid) and say, “She already knows that I love her, I needn’t tell her that again and again.” Buddy, (Friend) of course she knows that you love her, but she still likes to hear those words repeatedly.

And just like she does those little things to make you happy, you might as well do nice things to make her happy too. What are the phrases that you can use now that your relationship is more mature and you know each other?

  • I want to spend my life with you.
  • You complete my world.
  • I adore you.
  • We make a great pair.

And if you’ve gone and made her real angry and she refuses to talk to you; nothing will sound more pleasing or will work better than ‘I can’t live without you’.

Go ahead and win your lady love.
